Abstract

A synthetic binder for prodn. of resin concrete comprises a thermoplastic resin, a powder additive and an (in)organic filler. More specifically, the additive is a sulphonated polystyrene or sulphonated hydrocarbon polymer used in amt. of 0.5-5 wt. %, based on the thermoplastic resin, and is incorporated during mixing to act as an oxidn. catalyst for the thermoplastic and promote its adhesion to the fillers or granules. The thermoplastic resin is pref. a polyolefin, esp. polyethylene. The use of oxidising flames for oxidising the resin to improve its adhesion properties is obviated.
