Abstract
Biological purifcn. pit for sewage, coming from a small number of houses, is operated by means of activated sludge; it comprises a cylindrical tank with a vertical axis and a central orifice connected to the conduit leading to a lateral tank. The principal tank is closed by a lid supported by an aerating ring of porous material. Both tanks are closed by lids. The effluent arrives by the conduit and flows into the perforated basket fitted with a helix which acts as a comminutor for the solid particles. The helix is keyed to the vertical shaft which also drives the surface aeration turbine; this emulsifies the air and facilitates the rapid development of the aerobic bacteria. A driving turbine is also keyed to the shaft; it is driven by a jet of water under pressure from the nozzle and is of the Pelton type. The orifice is closed by a porous concrete disc; partly purified water passes through to the conduit where aerobic action continues until the anaerobic stage is reached when the water passes through the disc into the lateral tank. The base of the latter is divided by porous concrete transverse walls. The purified water finally leaves by the outlet. Appts. operates automatically without any electrical installation or motor. Each distribution of water under pressure not only drives the turbine but also the comminutor and the aeration turbine. The water thrown from the Pelton wheel rinses the walls of the tank and at the same time entrains oxygen.
