Abstract

In the prevention of inorganic efflorescence on the surface of gypsum mouldings, esp. gypsum wall boards to DIN 18 163, by applying copolymers based on vinyl acetate with organic acids and esters and their salts, a mixt. of two different copolymers in 1-2:1, pref. 1:1 wt. ratio is applied, the mixt. having a solids content of min. 10 wt. % and being suitable for dilution with water. The use of organic solvents can be eliminated and good priming coat for dispersion paints is obtd. One copolymer is added as ammonium salt, pref. of a vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer, and the other as dispersion, pref. of a vinyl acetate/di-n-butyl maleate copolymer. The pH of the copolymer is adjusted to over 7, pref. 8 with NH3 before mixing. In an example, a water based mixt. of this type was found to prevent efflorescence on a gypsum wall board, unlike coatings of a single copolymer in an organic or water-based solvent.
