Abstract

A fan (2) is used to create the lifting suction through an aperture (3) in the lower face of the fan casing. This aperture is covered by a fine wire mesh filter, or a block of expanded polystyrene, to restrict the air flow through those areas not covered by the load. Flexible curtains are fixed around the perimeter of the aperture, each separate and drawn inwards by the suction to close over the aperture and further restrict the air flow. A rectangular frame around the aperture has movable sides controlled by cylinders, used to centralise the load over the aperture.
