Abstract

A continuously operating vapour phase hydrocarbon reforming furnace consists of a parallelepipedic enclosure surrounding parallel sheets of catalyst tubes, containing a single catalyst suitable for reforming hydrocarbons ranging from natural gas to naphtha. This known catalyst comprises a pre-formed support containing >=70% of free MgO impregnated by nickel as the catalytic element. The furnace is novelly provided both with burners on the base plate and burners mounted on the lateral walls between and equally spaced from two adjacent sheets of catalyst tubes and in the upper quarter of the height heated from the base. Furnace prevents carbon formation when the feed stock is a naphtha by raising the temperature of the catalyst tubes at the upper end.
