Abstract

A reforming furnace, e.g. for prodn. of synthesis gas from hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, methane, ethane, propane, butane, refinery gas or naphthas, in the vapour phase, comprises catalyst tubes and a metallic reformer gas manifold joined together by a connecting tube of relatively small diameter welded to a catalyst tube at one end and to the gas manifold at the other end. The thickness (es) of the wall of the connecting tube at the location of the weld is >1.3 em and pref. 1.3-1.5 em, where (em) is the mean thickness of the connecting tube w wall. Tubes prevent incidence of cracking at the joint locations, which appears only if es/em 1.3.
