Abstract

A drum dryer for animal manure breaks up the pieces during drying, to form a powdered prod. In known appts. the product balls and produces material which is still wet in the centre or if the centre is dry the outside is burnt. Use of the new appts. produces good material, dry throughout. In the pref. appts. there is an input hopper which is stirred. The feed falls on to a screw conveyor driven in common with the stirrer by a variable speed motor. The feed goes to a pair of concentric cylinders which rotate. The heating is automatically controlled and may use liq. or gaseous fuel. The outer cylinder is supported on rollers and the inner cylinder contains a number of blades or a train of screws of varying pitch. Air is fed between the cylinders and is thus preheated. The outlet of the cylinders is connected to a housing contg. a fan and on the same shaft a number of blades extending radially. The housing also has a number of vertical passages through which the material passes. The prod. is collected in a vacuum cyclone.
