Abstract
Equipment for maintaining the pressure on a liq. maintained under monophase conditions using elevated pressures at high temps., when the liq. in the hot cell is connected via capillary tubes to ancillary devices for monitoring the pressure and adjusting the col. of the system to compensate for any effects tending to vary the pressure. The volume compensation device incorporate a pair of linked bellows filled with an incompressible fluid, one bellows being in a chamber on line with the pressurised capillary, the other bellows being surrounded by a reservoir for an independently adjustable hydraulic pressure source which can be used to vary the relative volumes of the two linked bellows. Esp. suitable for equipment conducting experiments at critical point cell conditions, e.g. 374 degrees C/221 bar pressure for water. The pressure compensation device is remote from the temps. in the cell, allowing use of pressure compensation bellows made of materials such as PTFE which can perform well, but not at the (high or low) temps. maintained in the cell. Heat transfer between the cell and the pressure control system is inhibited by use of capillary tubing for the pressure line link.
