Abstract
The fire detector has a hydraulic cylinder (2) containing a sliding piston (4) and connected at one side to a fluid reservoir (1) with a float. The opposite end of the cylinder (2) is connected to a conduit (6) with a number of buttons along its length, each of an alloy which melts at a relatively low temp. In the normal state both sides of the piston (4) are acted on by the same pressure, but when a leak occurs in the conduit (6), due to one or more of the buttons melting, the piston (4) is pushed along the cylinder (2), causing the liquid level in the reservoir (1) and hence the float to drop. Pref. a small dia. passage (5) is provided through the piston (4), allowing communication between the two sides of the cylinder.
