Abstract

The prepn. of N1-(2'-furanidyl)-5 substd. -uracil derivs. of formula (I) (where R is H, halogen or alkyl) comprises treating 2,3-dihydrofuran with dry HCl in an organic solvent, esp. a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, and reacting the prod. with 5-substd. -2,4-bis-(trimethylsilyloxy)-pyrimidines at is not >10 degrees C. The prods. of the reaction are also claimed. The prods. are esp. useful as antimetabolites of nucleic metabolism; N1-(2'-furanidyl)-5-fluorouracil is the active principle of an antitumour preparation. The present process gives improved yields c.f. prior art prepns. and the starting materials are more stable.
