Abstract

The tape is housed in a flat, rectangular holder (1) and can be withdrawn through a slot at one of the lower corners by means of a tab (5). The tape is graduated with a linear scale, and is stored on a revolving drum (7) with take-up spring. The tape passes over a second drum with pegs around its periphery which engage in holes punched at intervals in the steel tape. This drum has a free-wheel drive mechanism which turns a shaft (9) and third drum and thumbwheels (23, 42). This third drum draws a second tape (45) from a take-up spool and exposes an anti- logarithmic scale under a cursor window (44). This external thumbwheel is held by the operator after successive linear measurements and the accumulated measurements are converted to area or volume by the anti-log scale.
