Abstract

In the deposn of a metal and a plastic on a substrate, (a) the substrate is placed in a vacuum chamber contg. the anode and the cathode of a high-voltage d.c source; (b) vacuum is applied and an ionisable gas fed into the chamber, (c) the d.c. is applied to ionise the gas and clean the substrate surface; (d) vapour contg. the metal is fed in to deposit the metal; and (e) vapour contg. a monomer of the plastic is supplied so that the polymsd plastic is deposited on the substrate. The substrate is pref. a lamp reflector, the deposited metal Al, and the monomer is pref. hexamethyldisiloxane forming polydimethyldisiloxane. Used e.g. for mfr. of a curved reflector used in motor vehicle lamps, where the Al is coated with a layer of transparent, oxidn.-resistant plastic.
