Abstract

Fabrication of lampshades uses adhesive coatings or (double sided) adhesive tapes to secure pieces of fabric to a wire frame. The fabrics are draped over the frame and held taut by tie tapes or elastic while adhesives on the perimeter wires at the top and bottom of the frame set to anchor the fabrics. Surplus fabric beyond the frame perimeters is then cut away. Tapes are used to secure doubled back hems or to attach linings through spaces in the framework to an external cover. Method is quicker than traditional stitching techniques for securing segments of fabric, does not require skilled labour. The wire frames are pref. precoated with an epoxy, polyurethane or acrylic resin varnhis or with polyamide (RTM - 'Rilsan'). The fabrics pieces may be cut on a bias so as to support elastic tension while stretched over the frame.
