Abstract
A safety detonator comprises a detonating element (b), consisting of a very small quantity of explosive, situated in the bore of a thick-walled tube. This tube in turn is inserted in a long, open-ended, thin-walled tube (a), one end of which is connected to the detonator cord and the other to the fuse or electrical detonator (c). The thick-walled tube is pref. of metal, a metal alloy or a structurally strong plastic material compatible with the explosive mixture. It is pref. an integral part of the thin-walled tube or alternatively may be pressed, bonded or passed into the thin-walled tube. The total weight of explosive mixture is 4-200 (20-80) mg. The length of the thick-walled tube is at least 1.5 times its internal diameter. There may be a delay device, either inside the thick walled tube itself or outside it. Used in particular for mining, quarrying and tunnelling. The detonator is virtually proof against accidental detonation as a result of shock. It is therefore extremely safe to transport and handle.
