Abstract

The violoncello comprises a main body section (corps) and a neck section (manche) extending from the latter, its upper surface forming a fingerboard. The latter is provided with spaced fret bars along its length, such that when the violoncello is played, the vibrating section of each string is that between the selected fret bar and the fridge. The number of fret bars along the fingerboard may be variable and their spacing may be chromatic or quarter tone. The free bars may extend across the full width of the fingerboard under all the strings, or may only extend below a given number of the strings.
