Abstract

A composite rivet is made up of an outside portion which is hollow but which may have a variety of different shaped heads and may be countersunk or not. This part fits the rivet hole exactly. The core is made from a metal which is subject to deformation with heat and upon application is a split cylindrical component which will slip through the rivet hole. As the rivet cools down, the core shape opens into a cone and the outer component follows the movement. The two plates are pulled tight by the rivet. A number of alternative arrangements are possible such as a solid rivet with a metal collar outside the rivet.
