Abstract

The adjustable eddy-current or Foucault braking system is for use on rail vehicles. It comprises a ferromagnetic core in bar form (1) running parallel to the rail and between the two successive wheels of the vehicle (8). This has a widened portion (15) at each end shaped so as to fit against the wheel tyre, with a nose (5) extending partly between this and the rail. A first induction coil (2) is mounted opposite the rail, and a second one (6) on the widened portion adjacent to the wheel. A mechanism (9) moves the core up and down between a first position close to the rail and clear of the wheels, and a second one clear of the rail and close to the wheels. The two coils are excited simultaneously, so that their fluxes are added together in the widened portion.
