Abstract

Heads of cabbage are prepared for the mfr. of saukeraut (pickled cabbage) in a machine where the height of each head is measured and the depth required to bore out the stalk is set accordingly. Each head is topped, and tailed, the loose leaves are removed by a rotational movement, and the head is brushed before it is charged into a shredding machine. This saves most of the manual labour required in conventional procedures. The loss of food material and damage to the structure are kept to a min. Size variations and the condition of the heads are automatically compensated.
