Abstract
In the prodn. of a polyester yarn based on ethylene terephthalate, which, on detenting is capable of crimping, the pref. yarn has a double refractive index of 0.03-0.07, a capacity to shrink in boiling water of 40-80% and a crystallinity of is not >3%. Its matl. is for pref. a homopolymer or a copolymer with a large content of ethylene terephthalate units and a small content of units of a diol or an aromatic diacid derived elsewhere than from ethylene glycol or terephthalic acid. It is subjected to such a degree of stretching that after being stretching its elasticity is reduced to a value 15%. The stretching is localised at a point where the yarn shows a drop in temp. across its section, brought about by a brief passage of the yarn across a fixed, polished convexly curved surface maintained at a tem&. 2-30 degrees C below the m. pt. of the polymer. The process enables a satisfactory degree of crimp to be imparted at high speed. The crimps are fine and the elasticity of the yarn is good. There is no deformation of the section of the filaments and no trace of melting on their surfaces.
