Abstract

Animal and human feedstuffs are obtd. by enzymic hydrolysis of fish waste. Three times the volume of neutral, deionised water is added to the waste (2 1/2 times if the waste is finely divided). The mixt. is milled and the pH adjusted to 2 with HCl. Pepsin is diluted with deionised water and added to the bath. The best activity is obtd. at 40-42 degrees. The temp. is arranged to give good sepn. of oil without it oxidising. The reaction is controlled by for the formation of a homogeneous, liquid product and by analysis of amino acids (Sorensen method). When all the oils in suspension have been recovered the temp. is increased to 80 degrees to destroy remaining enzymes and any bacteria present. The product is filtered and can be concd. in vacuo or spray-dried. It can be incorporated in animal feeds or used in soups, creams, etc.
