Abstract

A modular system of controlled buoyancy, designed to dissipate the energy of a mass of water in motion or to deflect marine or river currents e.g. for the protection of coasts, vessels etc., comprises a combination of floating and non-floating elements. The elements are connected together in freely articulating manner by rigid or flexible tie rods to form an assembly situated at that distance from the surface which is best suited to dissipate the energy of, or deflect the currents in, the mass of water. Provides a breakwater of simple construction using extremely cheap elements e.g. used tyres, empty metal drums, Pref. the floating or non-floating elements are annular form e.g. discarded tyres, permitting limited passage to the water in motion. Some of these elements may have the toroid cavity filled with a buoyant material e.g. a plastics foam.
