Abstract

The parcel sorting system has a circulating stage where the parcels are placed into open topped circular containers, to pass a coding station before travelling to a buffer region adn then a discharge region, followed by return of the empty containers. Each Container has magnetic rings is its base, enabling it to be coded according to destination of the contents. At the selecting and discharge region, each container is passed by belt conveyors to successive rotary sorters each incorporating a scanning head which reads the code. When the appropriate core is read, the sorter is rotated either forwards or backwards, to discharge the contents into a chute either in front of or behind the conveyor. The empty containers then pass on to a holding zone from which they are passed again to the loading and coding station.
