Abstract

A process for fractionating organic components in hydrolysis solns. comprises (a) fractionating effluent in >=1 stage to remove small anions, (b) feeding the thus-purified effluent into a sorption material, the sugars and aldehydes being present as bisulphite addn. cpds., (c) eluating the sugars at raised temps. from the sorption material and feeding the resulting sugar soln. (in)directly to a crystallisation zone and (d) recovering the aldehyde from the sorption material by regeneration with an electrolyte soln. The process is esp. useful in the treatment of effluent from larch (which contains a high xylose content and significant amts. of furfural) but may also be used to treat pine effluent (which contains mannose) to recover sugars and furfural. The process is economical and widely-applicable.
