Abstract

Fuel cell consists of a rigid stack formed by numerous bipolar electrodes sepd. by semi-permeable separators, each electrode comprising an insulating frame round an active centre and the separators using an insulating frame of the same size round a semi-permeable centre, one surface of each of the active electrode centres is fed with fuel and electrolyte, whereas the other surface is fed with oxidant gas. The upper and lower edges of the electrode frames contain numerous microchannels which are parallel and equidistant to each other, the upper channels supply the fuel and electrolyte whereas lower channels are used to remove the electrolyte and reaction products, and the sides of the electrode frames each possess a channel, one supplying and the other removing the oxidant gas. The filter press. structure is easy to make on an industrial scale e.g. the electrodes and their frames can be co-extruded as continuous strip.
