Abstract
Water flows from the boiler through a solar energy collector and back to the boiler. It enters the boiler at the top and flows down inside a skirt extending to the level at which the heating circuit return is connected. The heating circuit flow is taken from the top of the boiler outside the skirt. This arrangement ensures effective mixing of the hottest water from the solar energy collector with the heating return water. If the heating demand is less than the heat available from the solar collector the surplus forms successive layers of hot water down the length of the boiler. Horizontal perforated plates are placed across the boiler to prevent natural convection from destroying the stratified layers at different temperature.
