Abstract

The mechanism has a forward portion for attachment to the rear end of a tractor etc, and on which a rear section pivots, while there are grab jaws underneath the latter engaging with the trunk to be hauled. The forward portion (14) is a rigid unit, and it and the rear section (16) are together rigid in the vertical plane. The forward portion is attached by means of a fork member (14a) to a point below, and preferably forward of, the rear axle (A) of the tractor (10). It is also coupled to the tractor by a power lift mechanism (12, 13) merely in order to alter the weight distribution and/or to grip the load. The points (23) at which the grab jaws (20b) are attached to the rear section can be an appreciable distance apart in the horizontal direction.
