Abstract

The fluidic-driven ventricle or pump avoids the defects of artificial hearts currently available, such as frequent thrombosis phenomena and major haemolysis due to traumatism of the red blood corpuscles. The small dimensions and the shape of the pump allow its use intracorporeally. It can work by applying fluid pressure waves travelling along an elastic tube. The pump wall can be very elastic and of thickness increasing from a minimum at the upstream end. The shape of the tubes through which the blood flows, and of the pump itself, can be varied to suit requirements.
