Abstract
Spent Al2O3 catalysts, used in selective o-alkylation of opt. monoalkyl-substd. monovalent phenols with 2-12C mono-olefines at 200-500 degrees C, are re-activated, for recycling and re-use, by contacting the recovered catalysts first with an O2-contg. gas, at 350-550 (400-500) degrees C, and then with steam at 350-550 (400-500) degrees C. Alkyl-phenols obtd. are useful as chemical intermediates and anti-oxidants. Thus, o-sec. Bu phenol, prepd. from phenol and butene, can be converted to 2,4-dinitro-6-sec-butyl-phenol, a selective agricultural herbicide. Catalytic activity is restored completely.
