Abstract

In the prodn. of polystyrene foam mouldings with improved flame retardancy by opt. multistage expansion of a polystyrene granulate or bead polymer contg. blowing agent using a hot aq. medium contg. alkali silicate, the aq. medium used for >=1 expansion stage contains a water-soluble alkali silicate or modified alkali silicate with min. 20 wt.% SiO2, min. 7wt.% K2O, 0-5wt.% Na2O and a viscosity of 35-150 cP at 20 degrees C and opt. hardener and/or filler. Used as flame-retardant or self-extinguishing insulants, e.g., in building. The process is relatively simple. The use of silicate solns. with a relatively high K content increases the flame retardancy to such an extent that the foam does not burn even at temps. above 800 degrees C. The mouldings can withstand temps. of min. 400 degrees C. Flames or higher temps. cause carbonisation, without structural change, but no burning with a free flame.
