Abstract

New silcarbane copolymers (I) contain randomly-distributed units of formulae (X is =CH3-CH2-or -Si(CH3)2R4; R = 1-3C linear alkyl; R1 = 1-3C linear alkyl or phenyl; R2 = H or CH3 when X is C(R3).CH2- or is H when X = Si(CH3)2R4; R3 = H or CH3; R4 = benzyl or 3-10C (un)branched alkyl provided that R1 and RIV are always different). TRhey are prepd. by copolymsn. of a vinyltriorganosilane with a conj. diolefin or a vinyldimethylorganosilane. (I) are used to make membranes with high selective permeability for gases and which have greater mechanical strength and elasticity than membranes from poly(vinyltrimethylsilane). The membranes are compatible with living tissue and so useful for making endoprostheses.
