Abstract
Process for the protection of glass fibres against chemical decomposition when the fibres are used as reinforcement for an alkaline matrix in an aq. phase consists of the use of >=1 chemical which reacts with the matrix and/or with the reaction products obtd. from the matrix and the water, so that the hydroxyl ions are chemically bonded with the simultaneous formation of a deposit in the immediate vicinity of the glass fibres, protecting the latter from attack by alkali. The chemical is pref. an acid, e.g. colloidal SiO2, crystalline boric acid, or an organic acid such as oxalic-, citric- or tartaric- acid. An inexpensive method of protecting glass fibres used e.g. for reinforcing portland cement or lime-silica mixtures. The pref. chemical also include an acid salt, e.g. a hydrogen phosphate, hydrogen sulphate, bicarbonate, or an acid anhydride, e.g. CO2, B2O3, or a hydrolysable cpd. forming an acid e.g. a hexafluorosilicate, and other chemicals may also be added.
