Abstract

The belt (1) is joined by a fastener (3), formed of moulded rubber. Near the ends of the fastener are strip magnets (4a, 4b) one being embedded each side. Underneath the belt but not in contact, is a sensor (5e which can detect the magnetic field from each magnet as it passes above. An impulse is recorded by an oscilloscope (6) on a chart whose speed correlates with that of the belt. The initial distance (1) apart of the magnets is known being a condition of incipient failure, it is detected when the peaks between the impulses are measured. The system is intended mainly for use with wire (2) reinforced belts.
