Abstract

Lubricant compsns. contain a major amt. of a lubricating oil and a minor amt. of a copolymer consisting of (a) 5-75 (pref. 20-75) wt.% of units derived from ethylene, (b) 5-85 (pref. 20-75) wt.% of units derived from a 3-6C monoolefin or from a 3-6C monoolefin and a nonconjugated diene, the proportion of diene units being =20%, and (c) 0.1-20 (pref. 0.15-15) wt.% of units derived from (i) a vinylimidazol(in)e opt. ring-substd. by opt. amino-substd. hydrocarbyl gps. or (ii) an N-heterocyclic cpd. of formula R-B (where R is 2-12C alkenyl; and B is a carbazole, thiobenzothiazole, phenothiazine or 4-15C lactam or thiolactam residue opt. ring-substd. by opt. amino-substd. 1-8c hydrocarbyl gps.), the copolymer having a reduced viscosity of 0.5-2 (pref. 0.7-1.7), as measured in 0.1% decalin soln. at 135 degrees C, and Mv'/Mn ratio of 5 (pref. 4, esp. 2-3,5). The lubricants are esp. useful as crankcase oils for IC engines. The copolymer acts simultaneously as a VI improver and a dispersant.
