Abstract

The parent patent described the heat treatment of an Al alloy at a temp. Tt, above that at which melting of the metastable phases starts but below that at which melting begins according to equilibrium thermodynamic conditions necessitating certain precautions esp. keeping the H2 content below 0.2 pref. 0.1 ppm. In this patent of addn. a process for improving the stress-corrosion resistance of Al alloy A-U4SG (2014) contg. e.g. 4.2% Cu, 0.75% Si, 0.5% Mg, 0.6% Mn and bal. Al comprises either soln. treating according to claim 1 of the patent patent then overaging for 24-72 hr. pref. 48 hr. at 175 degrees C or modifying the compsn. of the alloy by increasing the Cu and/or Mg and/or Si content up to their solubility limit in Al at Temp. Tt defined in the parent patent then soln. treating and overageing as above. The alloy shows good stress-corrosion resistance without a loss in mechanical props. and is partic. useful in aeronautical constructions.
