Abstract

Detecting device for microbial infections is partic. intended for the determn. of the presence of a urinary infection and of its seriousness. It comprises a support assembly with three of four panels for the culture medium and the antimicrobial agents; the panels radiate from a central core, fixed to the plug. Cavities in the panels received the cast medium which contains the agent which reveals the growth of germs; some of them contain antibiotic agents. The panel assembly fits into a transport recipient which in turn can be placed in the collecting bottle. A sample of urine is taken in the collecting bottle and the detecting system taken out of the transport recipient; the panel assembly is immersed in the freshly obtd. urine. They are ten withdrawn, allowed to drain and placed back in the transport recipient and despatched immediately to the laboratory. Here it is put into an incubator at 37 degrees C for >=12 hrs. when the panels are examined. A count of the colonies developed can be made on one panel and the effect of different concns. of antibiotic can be studied on the other panels; the results are noted on the report form and the device destroyed in the usual manner in bacteriological work. The device can be used by comparatively unskilled persons, even be the patient himself, quickly giving direct information in the time previously occupied by the preliminary stages of the examination.
