Abstract

The prodn. of CdS for electrophotography comprises (a) combining S= and Cd++ ions and a donor impurity (I) of a gp.IIIa or IIIb element, to form doped CsD; and (b) calcining the CdS, an acceptor impurity (II) being added in stage (a) or (b). The amt. of dopant can be controlled quantitatively and no flux is needed. The Cd++ ions can be supplied by CdSO4, esp. by dissolving Cd in the reaction medium in stage (a). In particular, a material forming Cd++ ions, (I) and opt. (II) are dissolved in aq. pref. 1-4 N H2SO4 and reacted with H2S at a suitable temp., pref. 40-80 degrees C, with stirring, and the CdS formed is calcined, pref. at 400-600 degrees C. The pref. concns. of the reagents are 1/2-3/2 M CdSO4, (0.5-6) x 10-3 g-ion (I)/mole CdS and (1-20) x 10-4 g-ion (II)/mole CdS. (I) pref. is In, Al, Ga or Sc sulphate and (II) Cu, Ag or Au.
