Abstract
Metering pump with method for ensuring a constant volume delivery in unit time independent of the delivery pressure uses a measure of the delivery pressure to adjust the pump delivery volume, increasing it with increased pressure. The pump is a piston pump with adjustable stroke and to adjust the volume, the stroke is adjusted. There is a damper in the pump delivery and a sensor for the delivery pressure on this which produces an electric signal fed to an electronic controller, this being in principle a Wheatstone bridge where the potential from the sensor is measured against a standard. This then adjusts a positioning motor which in turn can adjust either the stroke or the r.p.m. Esp. for metering solvent into chromotograph columns. Piston type metering pumps, including diaphragm tupes, suffer from the defect that the volumetric throughput of the pump declines with increasing delivery to achieve a constant output. The system described provides for adjustment of stroke to overcome this problem.
