Abstract
1460116 Oxygenating blood GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 21 March 1974 [6 April 1973] 12578/74 Heading A5R ]Also in Divisions G1 and G3] To control the flow of blood being pumped by pump 34 through oxygenating apparatus such as a membrane type blood gas exchanger 40 of an extracorporeal blood circuit a device is provided (Fig. 1) comprising a cover 6 and base 4 defining together a housing for a compliant reservoir 8, e.g. of metal, plastics or rubber, the cover being adjustable relative to the base to vary the maximum size of the reservoir, and means such as a spring-biassed plate 20 pivotally attached to the base 4 to respond to changes in volume and shape of the reservoir resulting from changes in the blood flow through the reservoir from inlet 13 to outlet 15, the plate 20 being coupled to a transducer such as a linear potentiometer 26 or autotransformer to provide an electrical control signal which is applied to the pump 34 to maintain constant the speed of the pump and thus the mass flow rate of the blood pumped through the circuit. Modified blood circuits are described (Figs. 4 and 5 not shown) in which the control device is used to control either vencus or arterial pumps with part of the blood flow being recycled through the reservoir 8 and the oxygenating apparatus 40.
