Abstract

The trailer braking system is controlled by a special electronic inertial sensor to operate the brakes when the towing unit brakes, without any brake line connections between the towing unit and the trailer. A sprung inertial mass is displaced by the retardation and moves over a magnetic sensor, with the output of the sensor proportional to the amount of retardation. The output of the sensor controls the amount of braking control for the trailer brakes to prevent the trailer from jackknifing or overrunning. For added control, the circuit is coupled to the brake pedal by a single electrical connection so that the trailer brakes only operate in conjunction with the towing unit brakes.
