Abstract
Process for permanently incorporating 0.1-25 wt. % additive in an unstretched or partly stretched melt-spun fibre of polyester, p olyamide, polyester amide, polypropylene ornhigh-density polyethylene, takes place by cold-drawing the fibre under a draw-ratio of 1.5:1 to elongation at break, so as to achieve a localised redn. of fibre dia. at a position which is immersed in a liq. or vapourised medium contg. the additive as soln. dispersion or emulsion in concn. = 100, esp. 0.1-99 wt. % provided: (1) max. particle size of dispersed or emulsified additive is =2 mu, (2) medium is a non-solvent for the unstretched fibre, (3) contact angle btween liq. medium and fibre-forming polymer is 90 degrees and (4) temp. of medium is below the effective vitreous transition temp. of the fibre when in contact with the medium. Process is for imparting new properties or improving existing properties, pref. flame-proofing, or opt. improving dyebility, anti-static behaviour, stabilisation and incorporating biocides. Physical properties of fibre are unimpaired.
