Abstract

The carburettor has a butterfly valve mounted on a spindle provided with a lever connected by a rod to a lever which actuates the auxiliary fuel pump. The auxiliary fuel pump has a chamber supplied with fuel from the float chamber, and a diaphragm which is depressed by a plunger under the action of the lever. When the butterfly valve opens, additional fuel is pumped through the valve to an orifice for easier starting. As the operating temperature increases, a bimetal spiral moves a slide to uncover a hole so that fuel flows back to the float chamber instead of to the orifice and reduces fuel consumption when the engine is warm.
