Abstract

A piston (2) slides in a cylinder (1), and has a toothed rack (3) meshing with a gear sector (4). The latter actuates a steering shaft, and the piston is mechanically coupled to a nut and worm, and rotation of the latter causes it to slide axially. The worm is coupled to a hydraulic rotary distributor with inner and outer rotors for the selective delivery of fluid to one or the other side of the piston depending on how they rotate. The outer rotor (12) is coupled to the worm (6), so as to turn with it with the aid of a coupling (16) allowing relative movement of worm and rotor at right angles to their axes, thus avoiding transmission of side-loading forces from piston to distributor.
