Abstract
The filter has a thermally insulating jacket and contains a filter element composed of refractory fibres. Air is supplied through a pipe to burn the soot particles which are deposited on the filter surfaces. The heated air then passes to the catalytic converter where successive layers of catalyst convert the harmful gases such as carbon monoxide and nitrous oxides. Extra air is supplied through pipes to enable the chemical reactions to take place. In order to conserve heat, the heated air for the combustion of the soot is taken from a heat exchanger and fed between the filter and catalytic converter.
