Abstract

alloys suitable for implants, which are free of traces of Pb, Sn, Bi and Cd, and do not contain Cr oxide inclusions, are prepd. by charging a vacuum furnace with the alloy in solid form, melting the charge under vacuum, and casting the alloy directly into a mould of the shape of the implant. The molten metal may be cast into bars, and then remelted and cast under vacuum. The alloys are used for surgical implants such as pins and plates for hip-, knee and elbow surgery.
