Abstract

In a nuclear boiler comprising a vertical, pressure vessel with its upper part closed by a cover and conts. the reactor core cooled by a liquid circulated by a pump which traverses >=1 heat exchanger, e.g. a pressurised water reactor used to produce thermal or electrical energy or to propel a ship, (a) the vessel has a flange at its upper part forming joint and supporting surfaces and having apertures leading to the interior of the vessel, such apertures equalling in number that of the vertical heat exchangers situated outside the vessel and connected thereto via the joint surfaces; (b) the heat exchangers are situated wholly above the joint level but are all below the cover and; (c) the pumps are also external to the vessel, and installed below the level of the cover. The reactor has reduced pressure vessel size, minimum length of external primary coolant pipes, ease of re-loading the core, and cooling by natural convection during pump break-down.
