Abstract

Cu is extracted from an aq. ammoniacal soln. obtd. by leaching copper scum, the soln. contg. foreign cations is treated with an organic solvent for extn. of the Cu into the organic phase which is then washed with dil. acid followed by the transfer of the Cu to an aq. phase. Before washing with dil. acid, the concn. of Cu is reduced to below the level at which the sepn. of phases occurs in the acid medium. The organic solvent is pref. diluted with fresh or recycled solvent to reduce the concn. of Cu by 5-20% esp. by >=10%. Formation of a third phase during the washing with dil. acid and/or excessive loss of Cu to the dil. acid is prevented.
