Abstract

Undesirable recirculation of exhaust gases to the engine intakes on the VTOL aircraft is prevented by the blown flap. The flap (5) is fitted forward of the jet pipes (1, 2) and may be retracted during cruise flight. When on or close to the ground, it is extended downwards and forwards. Air is supplied from the engine compressor via the flap hinge (6) and discharged through slots around the lower quadrant of the edge of the flap in a forward and downward direction. This air sheet entrains the exhaust gases and directs them along the ground away from the air intakes. It is also possible to use the flap as an air brake, in which case, it is only partially extended and not blown.
