Abstract

In a shock absorber for the top during of ingots, at least some of the surfaces of the combustible material forming the vertical walls of the absorber are coated with a layer based on aluminium. The layer of aluminium pref. consists of an aluminium foil flued onto the flat surface of corrugated paper or cardboard, or glued onto one or two surfaces of cardboard forming a honeycomb structure; alternatively, the Al coating may consist of an Al-base paint. The thickness of the aluminium layer is pref. calculated as the wt. necessary for deoxidation of a steel ingot. This device prevents splashes of molten steel from being thrown onto the mould walls; provides uniform deoxidn. of the steel and the Al retards the destruction of the cardboard so the absorber is more effective.
