Abstract

Food products are made by (1) partially softening edible seeds (grain) to prevent their fragmentation under pressure, (2) pressing the seeds to cause cracks and fissures to form in them and (3) applying an additive to the seeds to impregnate them by way of the cracks and fissures. This method allows rapid and continuous treatment of a wide variety of seeds and grains, and permits incorporation of water-soluble additives and emulsions and suspensions of insoluble substances which penetrate the cracks and fissures in the seeds and thus overcomes the problems associated with the coating of seeds and grains as in known processes. Suitable starting materials are e.g. wheat, maize, rye, lentils, sorghum, rice etc.
