4-(3-Benzoylphenyl)butanols and butenols of formula (I) and their esters (where X1 -4 are H halo, 1-5C alkyl 1-5C alkoxy, 1-5C alkylthio, OCF3, -SCF3, CF3, OH or di-(1-5C alkyl amino; and Z and X are H or 1-5c alkyl), have analgesic antiinflammatory and antirheumatic activity.
